Is charity good?

Peter Buffett, son of Warren Buffet, bashed charity in a New York Times op-ed, saying that his personal experience proved that philanthropy has not only failed to address social problems but also made people ignore the underlying systemic reasons for social inequalities. In contrast, Warren Buffet is zealous about charity and pledged to give 99 percent of his wealth to charity. So, do you think charity is a good thing?
