Should primary schools abolish English classes?

Wang Xuming, former spokesman for China’s education ministry, blogged that primary schools in China should abolish English classes and increase lessons on Chinese culture, triggering a heated debate online. Many support Wang’s proposal, arguing that it is a necessary move to reduce the burden on students and improve their declining competency in Chinese. Others believe the proposal is just empty talk unless high school entrance exams stop testing students’ English competency. What’s your take on the issue?
